Love With Six Yards

Love With Six Yards

I cannot point to the time when my love for Six yards started. I fondly remember my pre-teen days, when I would wait for mom to leave for her social do. The moment she would step out of the house,I would instantly drape her dupatta as a Saree and walk around the house. I did not know the pleats, just knew that the piece of cloth goes around you two times and the Saree is done. Indeed it was difficult to walk around with that two layered drape, but I always assumed that the Saree brings in the feminity and the small steps endured with drape further emphasized that.

My mom was never a enthusiast Saree draper. She loved buying and collecting them. But she never enjoyed wearing one. She has Sarees from almost every part of India and some must be more than  50 years old..

I actually learnt the tricks of Saree draping when I joined hospitality industry. As we say practice makes one perfect. I did perfect the art of Saree draping in seconds.

The 90s was the time when the hospitality uniform was undergoing a change. They did not want to follow the traditional Saree draping in their uniform styling. That was the time when the designers came to play. They crafted the Saree colours, designs and created their own styling. I loved the drapes. I remember Ravi Bajaj was the designer of Hyatt Hotel in Delhi, where I was working at that time. He gave us jacket over the Saree, and in one Saree styling he let the Gujarati style front pallu go up in bib style.

I started my Saree collection with my trouseau. I did not want designer sarees, just wanted the traditional Saree in my collection. I bought Patola,  Gharchola,  Jandhani, South silk, Kanjeevaram, mukaish work Saree, Badhani, Paithani.et al. Some of these sarees I am yet to wear. They are heavy and I am still not very confident of draping heavy sarees.

My love continues with the six yards and I find comfort in styling the drape in my own comfortable way.
